Indwelling catheter

  • indwelling catheter

Brief

Indwelling catheter is a thin tube that goes in through your urethra and up to your bladder. The bladder end of the catheter has a balloon filled with water to help keep it in place.

The catheter is held in the bladder by a water-filled balloon, which prevents it from falling out. At the other end, outside your body, a drainage bag collects your urine.

CHARACTERITICS

An indwelling urinary catheter helps drain pee from your body when you can’t do it on your own.

Most indwelling catheters need to be changed as less than 30 days.

How to Clean Your Catheter:

  • 1.Wash your hands with soap and warm water.
  • 2. Place the catheter in the body to avoid pulling the catheter while cleaning.
  • 3. Using the other hand, wipe the catheter with a soap cloth. Start from where it entered your body and wipe it in the direction of the drain bag. This helps prevent bacteria from being wiped from the tube into your body.
  • 4. Clean the area of the catheter into the body with a soaped cloth.
  • 5. Rinse off any soap, then pat yourself and dry the tube with a clean towel. If you have a suprapubic catheter, wear a new bandage.
  • 6. Put the cloth and towel into your clothes and do not use them until you clean.
  • 7. Wash your hands again.
  • When cleaning, look for signs of infection, such as swelling, redness, pus or pain, at the point where the catheter enters. If you notice any of these symptoms, call your doctor.
