CHARACTERITICS

What is artificial rupture?

  • Amniocentesis, also known as artificial membrane rupture (AROM), and by deliberately destroying the amniotic sac by describing “breaking water.”
  • Such procedures are common in labor management and are performed by obstetricians for at least several hundred years.
  • Deliberate rupture of the amniotic sac during childbirth is multifaceted, including but not limited to affecting the rate of childbirth, allowing for more direct monitoring of fetal status, as well as a qualitative assessment of amniotic fluid.

Why do you need artificial rupture?

  • The two principal reasons for artificial rupture of membranes are (1) to induce or augment the labour processor (2) to assist in the placement of internal fetal monitoring to provide the direct assessment of fetal status.
  • Monitoring of the fetal heart rate as well as uterine activity can be easily obtained via external monitoring systems.
  • However, in certain circumstances, a more direct evaluation of the fetal heart rate or uterine activity is required during labour.
  • The amniotic membrane presents a physical impediment to this form of monitoring, and to place a fetal scalp electrode or intrauterine pressure catheter the membranes must necessarily be broken before placement.

When is it done?

  • After your cervix begins to expand or open, the artificial rupture is completed and the baby’s head is firmly placed in the pelvis.
  • This helps prevent the umbilical cord from slipping around or under the baby’s head.

How to do it?

  • The doctor or midwife puts the Amniotic Fluid Hook into the vagina. The device may look like a long crochet hook. It can be a smaller hook attached to the finger of a sterile glove.
  • The hook is used to gently pull the amniotic sac until the capsule ruptures. This usually does not cause pain.
  • A large amount of fluid usually flows out of the body following the rupture of the capsule. The uterus continues to make fluids until the baby is born. So you may continue to feel the leak, especially after the austerity.
